RESOLUTION REGARDING THE MAY 1, 2008
"TOGETHER WE ARE THE NEW MAJORITY" MARCH AND RALLY
Introduced to the Chicago, Illinois City Council April 9th 2008
WHEREAS, In 2006, millions marched to defeat the Sensenbrenner bill
in the United States Congress that would have disrupted the lives of
12 million undocumented individuals and their families; and
WHEREAS, Since 2003, millions have marched to end the war in Iraq;
and
WHEREAS, In 2008, millions rallied and voted for a new movement of
hope to provide universal health care, place a moratorium on home
foreclosures, provide a second chance for ex-offenders, renegotiate
NAFTA, fight for a living wage and an immigration reform to stop the
raids, deportations, no-match firings and separation of families;
and
WHEREAS, Although there is a well-funded and vocal minority of hate
that has created the danger of division in the past, as the Reverend
Jesse Jackson has said, "Black brown red yellow and white, we are
all equal in God's site" must be the motto of the future that binds
us all together; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago, will make
the opening speech on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the "Together We are
the New Majority" March and Rally; and
BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago
City Council, assembled here this 9th Day of April, 2008 AD, hereby
express our fervent hope for a large, orderly and peaceful Mayday
Rally and extend our felicitations to the Chicago Mayday
Coordinating Committee for its wise and prudent preparation for this
sensitive and important event
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a suitable copy of this resolution be
prepared and presented to the Chicago Mayday Coordinating Committee.
