Commentary by Emile Scheppers Ph.D
The discharge petition shows 169 sign ons which will send the SAVE act straight to the House floor, taking it out of the committees in which Pelosi has it currently bottled up. Since the number of signatures needed on the discharge petition is 218 (1/2 of the membership + 1, i.e. the majority that would be needed to pass the thing too), it means that they need only 49 more people to sign on. I counted 9 democrats on the petition so far, though 48 democrats signed on to HR 4088, the SAVE Act, as co-sponsors. So they can do this if we don't stop this, and they are pushing VERY hard. The right wing Washington Times had an editorial and an op ed pushing the SAVE act in today's edition, plus I got a letter from my own ultra-rightist congressman, Frank Wolf, just on the SAVE act.
Among the many distortions in all this plugging of SAVE is that they all CONCEAL the fact that the act will result in
*thousands
of US citizens and permanent legal residents losing their jobs.
For example,If an employer receives a No Match letter with your
name on it, you have just TEN DAYS to clear up the discrepancy
by contacting the Social Security administration, after which
your employer IS OBLIGED BY LAW TO FIRE YOU. And it is estimated
that there are 17 million Social Security Administration files
that contain errors. The first batch of No-Match letters that
went out under the regime of the SAVE act would result in
hundreds of thousands of people trying to contact the SSA at
once, and I can not imagine how the bureaucrats there could turn
around all those requests for information in 100 days, let alone
10. So everybody will get fired, supposedly.
So it is vitally important not to let them get the 49 more
signatures that they need.
People in Illinois who receive this e-mail should go after Melissa Bean who has signed onto the SAVE Act as a co-sponsor but as far as I can see has not signed the discharge petition yet, and probably Lipinski who is not on the SAVE act but who voted for the Sensenbrenner bill in 2005.
